Guess the location is back! – Day 1

Anyone who has been following along will remember the guess the location challenge I ran some time ago. It was a lot of fun and I want to do it again although slightly differently. This time I’ll be posting a new challenge daily for a week with a chance to win $50 or $100 gift certificates that can go towards any of my scenic prints.

To play simply post your best guess in the comment section below!

Todays winner will receive a $100 Gift certificate!

Here are the competition rules:

  1. Only one guess per person per image
  2. You must “Like” the Howarth Photography Facebook page to be eligible
  3. A valid email address must be provided (email addresses to be left in provided field and are NOT shared)
  4. Instances where there are multiple correct answers either the first or the most specific will win.
  5. Winners will be contacted and issued a Gift Certificate with prize amount within 48hours. All winners will be annouced at the end of the challenges.
  6. Overseas contestants are welcome, I’ll provide the shipping on any prints claimed through the GC.

Let the games begin!

This image is one of my favourites, the story of how I captured it is completely random and I was honestly lucky. Certainly not the typical, glamorous image one would expect from Bermuda but none the less it has memories attached to it and I still remember everything about the details of the day, where and why I was there. Anyway, I never said this would be easy so just post your best guess! (for those that know where it is from past conversation – you are not allowed to play! I know who you are…:))

For those interested – f6.3, 20seconds, 100ISO at 22mm

Spencer Family!

Some time ago good friend and fellow (awesome) photographer Becky Spencer asked me to take some pics of her and the family for Christmas cards. After all photographers need their pictures taken too! At the time things were super busy so I never really processed them, I simply handed her the RAW files. Well with things being slower this time of year and with me longing for a fun session like this I decided to give the blog some Spencer family love!

It was a fun, off the cuff afternoon with some goofing around and a chance for Becky to be on the other side of the camera alongside Ron, Dylan and Ryan!

Beautiful photos of a beautiful family!

Photographer and Client relationships, it’s not just the shutter that has to click…

This time of year inevitably the photographic session’s decrease which leaves me more free time but also leaves me without fresh images and awesome clients to blog about. Over the next couple of months I wanted to try writing more about various aspects of the business and hopefully provide some useful information.

To start off with I wanted to discuss the photographer to client relationship. The last several weeks I’ve been having numerous meetings with my 2011 brides as well as potential clients and this topic is one that I always try and get into. Anyone who has not been through the process, getting married, wedding planning or photographing a wedding probably doesn’t appreciate just how much of a role the photographer plays in the big day. Of all the vendors that you are likely to work with it’s safe to say that your photographer will be one of the first you book and depending on albums etc. most likely still working with you long after the wedding. Assuming you’re planning your wedding a year out then we’re talking up to around eighteen months. Over the course of this time there can be many hours working together, from the planning, shooting the engagement session and of course the wedding along with any time after for album meetings. This reason alone makes it so important that you choose a photographer that you trust, and feel comfortable working with.

I have on several occasions developed great friendships with clients after working with them, in some cases it’s hard not to. A wedding photographer almost becomes an additional member of the wedding party.  I spend the majority of the wedding day surrounded by the bridal party and immediate family, the one’s you are closet to, bearing witness to one of the most precious moments of your life. Seeing and feeling the emotion, love and joy that your friends and family will all feel for you. It truly is an amazing thing to be a part of and witness. To be honoured with that level of trust and welcomed into the inner circle, if only for that one day is truly magnificent indeed.

These are all things that I try and emphasize during client meetings. A good relationship between the photographer and client is a must. I honestly feel that this is one of the most important points to portray and keep it as a very high priority when booking new clients. I have and will continue to pass on potential work if there isn’t that connection. Not everyone can work together as well as others hence why the marketplace has all sorts of vendors with a wide range of services, styles and selection. Knowing that my clients have met with other vendors and have since chosen to book with me means that they believe in me and we share in that connection.

Quite often I find that there is this assumption out there that the photographer is going to be in your face, spouting orders, pretty much a negative take on the role in general. While I am in no position to speak for others I can say that is totally not the case with the way I conduct myself on the day. One of the greatest compliments I can get is that “I didn’t even notice you were there!” or something along those lines. This is your special day, this is about you, I am only there to observe and document. Obviously when appropriate I intervene but knowing when and when not to is half the battle.

Ok, let’s talk about fun! I always try and have fun, engagement sessions are the perfect opportunity to get to know and bond with my clients. More often then not the future groom is a little skeptical and wary of this so called “fun” photographic session, he has usually been coaxed or threatened into it. That said, I can’t think of one session where we didn’t finish up with everyone feeling great and admittedly having had a good time, sometimes even ending up having a couple of drinks after. Let’s face it, I have a lot more chance getting some real emotion out of happy, comfortable, relaxed people! The more emotion I can witness the better the pictures. Natural, fresh images that best represent you. This then paves the way for great wedding images!

2010 in review!

2010 was a fantastic year, it’s hard to believe that it’s come and gone so quickly! The wedding season really ramped up in May and kept me flat out through July which then led into the Spirit of Bermuda Expedition, a welcome relief from the stress of back to back weddings. This year saw me take on 26 weddings in total plus an array of other sessions from families to newborn babies. Admittedly, that was far more than intended leaving me at times under a lot of pressure and fighting my way through a seemingly endless amount of images.

I was fortunate to have so many amazing clients that really make my job fun and exciting. Each and every wedding was truly special and unique in its own way, bonding and sharing in the experience with my clients is the most amazing part of any wedding. I become an extension of the wedding party, entrenched in the excitement of the day. Being there to witness these magical moments is such a privilege, I am very fortunate!

Amazing venues, great clients and the best vendors in the business. Have a look here at some of the awesome weddings shot this year.

The 2011 season is looking good so far, I’ve booked 90% of my goal for the year and at this rate will be fully booked within a few weeks! There will be some new changes, updated products and further refinements along the way. Everything is a learning experience and from season to season I strive to raise the bar in every aspect. Exciting times!

A change in pace…

With the wedding and portrait season finally over I took to Bermuda’s magical shoreline once again, the first time since March. Sunday afternoon was spectacular and soaking up an evening of gorgeous scenery was definitely needed. To think I live on an island this densely populated and for the whole time I was there never saw another person!

The Dzurus Family!

Denise and Ronnie have the most gorgeous twins ever, stunning and just bursting with energy. So much so that to get them to stay still was just not happening.. With each darting off in different directions we were all exhausted by the end of the shoot. We had the whole Southlands beach to ourselves on a blustery Saturday afternoon, so much fun!

Gabriella & Ciro

Well here you have it, the final wedding for the 2010 season and what a wedding it was! Gabby and Ciro lucked out with perfect weather on a lovely November afternoon. With Elbow Beach Hotel and Lido all to themselves the day couldn’t have flowed better. The crisp afternoon air giving way to a cozy dinner in the Gazebo, fun was certainly had by all!

I wouldn’t normally blog so many images from an afternoon wedding but it was so awesome and I couldn’t have finished the season off on a better note!

Congratulations Gabby & Ciro!
